Living Beyond Parkinson’s: Tan Sri Bakri’s Journey of Hope, Resilience and Recovery

“Today, I am more confident than before.” — Tan Sri Bakri Zinin
For most people, Parkinson’s disease is associated with tremors, stiffness, and declining mobility. But for former Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Bakri Zinin, the diagnosis represented something far deeper—a challenge to the independence, confidence, and active lifestyle that had defined him throughout his distinguished career.
Recently, Tan Sri Bakri returned to the European Wellness Premier Center (EWPC) in Kota Kinabalu for his latest follow-up treatment. Having undergone multiple regenerative therapy sessions over the years, including his eighth stem cell treatment, he reflects on a journey that has transformed not only his physical condition but also his outlook on life.
“Compared to last year, I am much better,” he says with confidence. “My speech has improved. There is still some stiffness, but overall I feel much stronger than before.”
For a man who once served as Malaysia’s Deputy Inspector-General of Police and was responsible for maintaining law and order across the nation, losing control over simple movements was one of the most difficult adjustments.
“When Parkinson’s started affecting my movement, even taking the first few steps could be challenging,” he recalls. “You have to imagine wanting to walk normally, but your body does not always respond the way you want it to.”
Finding Strength Again
One of the clearest signs of progress has been his return to physical activity.
Today, Tan Sri Bakri enjoys playing pickleball and remains committed to regular exercise as part of his recovery program.
“I play pickleball now and I walk regularly,” he says. “I focus on making sure my steps are correct and that I continue moving freely.”
More importantly, he has regained confidence.
“When I face people now, I am not afraid. I can stand confidently, speak to the public, and carry on conversations.”
That confidence, he says, has been one of the most meaningful outcomes of his treatment journey.
“Hope comes from confidence. When you begin to feel stronger and see improvements, you start believing in yourself again.”
A Journey That Requires Commitment
Tan Sri Bakri is realistic about Parkinson’s disease.
He understands there is no overnight solution.
Instead, he describes recovery as a gradual process requiring commitment, consistency, and continuous monitoring.
His treatment program at European Wellness combines regenerative medicine with lifestyle interventions aimed at supporting neurological health and overall well-being.
Tan Sri Bakri’s Regenerative Therapy Program
- Brain-Specific Precursor Stem Cell Therapy: Targets brain cells affected by Parkinson’s to support movement, memory, balance, and cognitive function.
- Dopaminergic Support Protocols: Helps support dopamine-related brain pathways responsible for movement, coordination, and motor control.
- Neuroprotective Cellular Therapy: Aims to protect existing brain cells while promoting cellular repair and regeneration.
- Personalized Stem Cell Monitoring: Regular evaluations allow treatments to be adjusted according to the patient’s progress and needs.
- Anti-Inflammatory Regenerative Support: Helps reduce inflammation associated with neurodegenerative conditions and supports cellular recovery.
- Precision Nutraceutical Supplementation: Specialized supplements support brain health, energy production, circulation, immune function, and overall vitality.
- Physical Rehabilitation & Exercise Support: Combines physiotherapy, walking, stretching, and balance exercises to improve mobility, strength, and independence.
- Sleep & Recovery Optimization: Supports quality sleep, which is essential for brain repair, energy, and neurological recovery.
- Long-Term Wellness Management: Ongoing follow-up care helps maintain progress, optimize health, and improve quality of life over time.
The Science Behind the Treatment
According to Prof. Mike Chan, Parkinson’s disease is caused by the progressive degeneration of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain.
“Traditional treatment focuses largely on symptom management,” explains Prof. Chan. “Our goal is to support the body’s regenerative capacity through targeted precursor stem cell therapy, neuroprotective support, and precision medicine.”
The therapy aims to support neurological function by promoting cellular repair, reducing inflammation, improving communication between neurons, and enhancing overall brain health.
While results vary between patients, many report improvements in mobility, energy, cognition, sleep quality, and emotional well-being.
“Every Parkinson’s patient is different,” says Prof. Chan. “The key is a personalized approach that evolves alongside the patient’s condition.”
More Than a Medical Team
For Tan Sri Bakri, the relationship with European Wellness extends beyond treatment.
Throughout his journey, he has developed a close friendship with Prof. Mike Chan and the medical team.
“Prof. Mike is not just a doctor,” he says. “He is a friend.”
“He regularly calls and messages me. He asks how I am doing and whether there are any new issues. That level of care means a lot.”
He also praises the professionalism of the doctors, nurses, and staff at European Wellness.
“The doctors are very professional. The nurses and staff are caring and down-to-earth. Every time I come here, I feel well taken care of.”
A Message to Other Parkinson’s Patients
Having personally experienced the challenges of living with Parkinson’s disease, Tan Sri Bakri hopes his story can encourage others facing similar battles.
“Parkinson’s is not easy. It affects your movement, your confidence, and your daily life.”
“But don’t give up.”
He believes patients should actively seek solutions, remain committed to their treatment plans, and maintain hope throughout the journey.
“I always tell people to explore all available options and learn more about regenerative medicine. It has helped me tremendously.”
He has already introduced many friends and acquaintances to European Wellness after seeing his own progress.
“When people see me, they notice the difference. Naturally they ask questions.”
Looking Forward
Today, hope means something different to Tan Sri Bakri than it did when he was first diagnosed.
Back then, hope was simply about managing symptoms and maintaining independence.
Today, hope is about progress.
It is about continuing to improve, continuing to contribute, and continuing to enjoy life.
“I look forward to every treatment because I believe it helps me.”
His determination remains unchanged.
“As long as there are opportunities to improve, I will continue.”
For a man who spent a lifetime protecting others, his greatest mission today is protecting his own health—and inspiring others facing Parkinson’s disease to never stop believing in the possibility of a better tomorrow.
“I believe in this treatment,” he says. “I believe in it very much.”
And perhaps that belief, combined with perseverance and hope, has become one of the most powerful medicines of all.
