BUCHAREST, Romania, (April 29, 2026) — The visit of Oscar-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. to Romania moved beyond a show of support for a new pediatric psychiatry clinic when he held meetings at the Romanian Senate, bringing attention to healthcare policy and potential international collaboration.

Gooding Jr., who had earlier toured the construction site of a children’s psychiatric facility at Alexandru Obregia Clinical Hospital, was joined at the Senate by regenerative medicine specialist Prof. Mike Chan.

Romanian media, including Libertatea and Radio Impuls, reported that the visit to parliament followed the hospital tour, signaling growing institutional interest in the initiative.

Shift Towards Policy Discussion

The Senate visit marked a shift from public awareness efforts to discussions at the policy level, where healthcare priorities and funding frameworks are determined.

The presence of Prof. Chan added a scientific dimension to the visit. Known for his work in regenerative and precision medicine, he advocates approaches that target neurological conditions at the cellular level.

“Healthspan begins at the cellular level. When we improve the health of the cells, we change the future of the individual,” Prof. Chan said during the visit.

His participation highlighted the potential for combining emerging treatment approaches with conventional psychiatric care, particularly in areas such as autism and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Historic Institution

The Romanian Senate is a central part of the country’s legislative system, reflecting Romania’s political history.

It was established in 1864 under Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza as part of early constitutional reforms, abolished in 1947 during the communist period when legislative power was centralized, and reinstated after the 1989 Revolution as Romania returned to a bicameral parliamentary system.

The Senate now operates from the Palace of Parliament, one of the largest administrative buildings in the world.

Healthcare Initiative Gains Visibility

The visit has helped raise the profile of the pediatric psychiatry clinic project, led by the Metropolis Foundation, which aims to improve access to mental healthcare services for children and adolescents.

The presence of public figures, medical experts, and policymakers has turned the initiative into a platform for broader discussion on autism care, pediatric psychiatry, and future healthcare models.

For Prof. Chan, the Bucharest visit forms part of a wider international effort to promote advances in regenerative medicine and neurological care.

For Cuba Gooding Jr. the trip illustrates how celebrity involvement can amplify awareness and support for healthcare projects, helping bring a local initiative into a wider international spotlight.
