Prof. Mike Chan Receives Gold Medal from Spain’s Royal Medical Academy
MADRID, Spain (Sept 30. 2026) — Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Mike Chan was awarded a Gold Medal by Spanish Royal Academy of Medicine (RANME) in Madrid, recognising his contributions to longevity and regenerative medicine.
Chan was one of four scientists to receive the individually inscribed medal from RANME President Dr. Eduardo Díaz-Rubio, with International Longevity Summit Chairman Dr. José Luis Cordeiro alongside him at the presentation.
The award was presented at the Academy’s historic headquarters in Madrid.
RANME, founded in the 18th century, is a national scientific institution operating under the High Patronage of the King of Spain and forms part of the Institute of Spain.
Its official statutes give the Academy a role in advising the Spanish monarchy, government and other state institutions on matters involving medicine, health and healthcare.
The Academy can also award medals of honour to people distinguished for their contributions to science, academia and healthcare.
Historic Institution
RANME traces its origins to 1733, when a group of doctors, surgeons and pharmacists began meeting in Madrid to discuss developments in medicine.
King Felipe V approved its first statutes the following year, beginning a relationship between the institution and the Spanish Crown that has continued for almost three centuries.
The Academy has also had links with some of the most prominent figures in medical science.
An Academy publication has documented 18 Nobel laureates in physiology or medicine who were members of RANME in different categories, either before or after receiving their Nobel prizes.
Chan’s Gold Medal was individually inscribed with his name.
The recognition adds to a series of international awards and appointments received by Chan, whose work over more than four decades has covered biotechnology, regenerative medicine, cellular therapy, longevity and healthspan.
Nobel Claim Needs Verification
Information provided by Chan’s team said a similar medal had previously been given to Spanish Nobel laureates.
However, available Academy material establishes RANME’s strong historical links with Nobel laureates but does not establish that the medal presented to Chan was the same specific Gold Medal previously presented to Spanish Nobel winners.
That comparison should therefore be independently confirmed before publication.
