Prof. Mike Chan Appears on Focus Malaysia

Malaysia’s Leading Role in Global Healthspan and Regenerative Medicine

Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Mike Chan joined an international delegation of healthcare specialists to Bulgaria on the invitation of the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, a significant event highlighted by Focus Malaysia. The mission aimed to foster discussions on healthy ageing, healthcare innovation, and scientific collaboration. Prof. Mike Chan, a pioneer in regenerative medicine and founder of the European Wellness Biomedical Group, has traveled around the world treating celebrities, head of states, sports athletes and highly influential individuals. His recent trip to Bulgaria underscores the growing importance of international cooperation in developing healthcare solutions that improve both longevity and quality of life.

The Shift from Lifespan to Healthspan

A central theme of the discussions in Bulgaria was the concept of healthspan rather than simply lifespan. Instead of focusing solely on helping people live longer, Prof. Mike Chan advocated for healthcare strategies that enable people to remain healthy, active, and independent well into old age. This approach reflects a broader shift in healthcare policy worldwide, where researchers and policymakers are placing greater importance on preventing age-related illnesses and preserving physical and cognitive function.

As Prof. Mike Chan emphasized during meetings with Bulgaria’s Health Ministry:

“Living longer only has value if people remain healthy, active and independent.”

This perspective is increasingly seen as essential to easing long-term pressure on healthcare systems while improving overall quality of life.

Integrating AI and Precision Healthcare

The delegation also met with officials from Bulgaria’s Innovation and Digital Transformation Ministry to discuss the intersection of biotechnology, digital healthcare, and the growing role of AI. Advances in AI, data analytics, and precision medicine are enabling healthcare providers to diagnose diseases earlier, tailor treatments more effectively, and improve long-term patient outcomes. These technologies are expected to play an increasingly important role alongside conventional medical practice as healthcare systems continue to evolve. The discussions reflected the increasing convergence of medical science and digital technologies in shaping future healthcare systems.

Fostering International Scientific Partnerships

Beyond government engagements, the delegation visited hospitals, universities, and healthcare institutions to exchange expertise in clinical practice, medical research, and healthcare delivery. The program explored opportunities for future collaboration in medical education, scientific research, and the application of regenerative medicine within clinical settings. The diversity of backgrounds among the participants allowed for the exchange of perspectives on emerging research, clinical applications, and healthcare innovation, strengthening professional networks across Europe and Asia.

Prof. Mike Chan highlighted the importance of these collaborations:

“Our future lies in international scientific partnerships. When researchers, clinicians and governments work together, innovation moves much faster and patients benefit sooner.”

For Malaysia, this mission demonstrated how local expertise in regenerative medicine can contribute to global discussions on healthy ageing, biomedical research, and the future of healthcare.
