Prof. Mike Chan Meets Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev as Bulgaria Explores Deeper Healthcare and Regenerative Medicine Collaboration

Prof. Mike Chan joins an elite international medical delegation for high-level discussions on healthspan, regenerative medicine, and scientific collaboration.

SOFIA, Bulgaria (July 13, 2026) — Malaysian scientist and regenerative medicine pioneer Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Mike K.S. Chan met Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev during a high-level official mission to Sofia as Bulgaria explored opportunities for deeper international cooperation in healthcare, regenerative medicine, scientific research, and medical innovation.
The meeting with Prime Minister Radev formed a central highlight of the mission, bringing together an international delegation of eminent physicians, scientists, and medical innovators for discussions on how emerging healthcare technologies and cross-border scientific partnerships could contribute to the future of medicine.
The significance of the engagement was also reflected in an official statement by Bulgaria’s Council of Ministers, which reported that Prime Minister Radev discussed possibilities for deeper international partnership in healthcare with leading medical specialists and researchers on July 13. For Prof. Mike, whose work spans more than four decades in regenerative and precision medicine, the meeting provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives on regenerative medicine, stem cell science, healthspan, mitochondrial medicine, and new approaches to addressing aging and chronic disease.
High-Level Government Engagement
Following the meeting with Prime Minister Radev, the official program continued with engagements involving Bulgaria’s Ministry of Health and Ministry of Innovation and Digital Transformation, reflecting the multidisciplinary scope of the mission—from healthcare and clinical innovation to biotechnology, digital transformation, and emerging medical technologies.
Bulgaria’s current Minister of Health is Katya Ivkova, while Ivan Vasilev serves as Minister of Innovation and Digital Transformation, according to the official Bulgarian Council of Ministers cabinet listing.
At the Ministry of Health, Prof. Mike presented European Wellness’ philosophy of focusing not merely on lifespan but on extending healthspan—the years in which people remain healthy, active, and independent.

According to Prof. Mike, the concept generated considerable interest among Bulgarian health officials.
“The Ministry of Health was particularly impressed when I explained that our focus is healthspan extension—not simply longevity. Living longer only has value if people remain healthy, active, and independent,” he said.

Discussions covered regenerative medicine, stem cell science, mitochondrial medicine, peptide therapy, and future healthcare models designed to respond to aging populations and chronic diseases.
Bulgarian officials were also introduced to European Wellness’ work in precision regenerative medicine, including organ-specific precursor cells, exosomes, peptides, and personalized therapeutic approaches.
Innovation and Digital Transformation
The delegation also engaged with the Ministry of Innovation and Digital Transformation, led by Minister Ivan Vasilev, where discussions broadened beyond conventional healthcare to emerging technologies and their potential role in future medicine.

The engagement explored areas including medical innovation, biotechnology, digital healthcare, artificial intelligence, and the integration of new scientific technologies into future healthcare systems.
For Prof. Chan, the discussions highlighted the growing convergence between regenerative medicine and technology, particularly as advances in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and precision diagnostics increasingly influence how diseases are detected, monitored, and treated.
From Lifespan to Healthspan
Throughout the mission, Prof. Chan emphasized the importance of shifting the global healthcare conversation away from simply helping people live longer toward enabling them to remain healthier for longer.
He shared insights into developments in stem cell science, regenerative medicine, and mitochondrial medicine—fields attracting increasing international attention as governments seek more sustainable approaches to aging populations and chronic diseases.
The discussions also opened opportunities to explore future scientific and institutional cooperation connecting Bulgaria with medical researchers and healthcare organizations internationally.
International Medical and Scientific Delegation
Prof. Mike Chan participated alongside a nine-member international delegation, bringing together specialists and scientists from several countries, including Germany, Japan, and Taiwan.
The broader delegation contributed expertise spanning respiratory medicine, regenerative medicine, stem cell technologies, neurosurgery, artificial intelligence, and international medical technology transfer.
Their individual expertise and potential areas of scientific collaboration are explored separately as part of the wider Bulgaria mission.

Expanding the Mission Across Bulgaria’s Healthcare Institutions
Beyond the senior government engagements, the program included visits and meetings involving several major Bulgarian healthcare and academic institutions, including the National Health Insurance Fund, Lozenets University Hospital, Tokuda Hospital, and the Medical University.
These engagements created further opportunities to exchange expertise in healthcare delivery, medical research, education, regenerative medicine, and future clinical collaboration.
Deputy Prime Minister Hosts Official Dinner
The program also included a dinner hosted by one of Bulgaria’s deputy prime ministers, bringing government representatives and members of the international delegation together in a more informal setting to strengthen relationships and continue discussions on international medical and scientific cooperation.

A Platform for Future Healthcare Collaboration
For Prof. Mike, the Bulgaria mission represents an important opportunity to bring Malaysian-led expertise in regenerative and longevity medicine into dialogue with European government, scientific, and healthcare institutions.
The meeting with Prime Minister Radev, together with engagements across Bulgaria’s health and innovation ministries, hospitals, and academic institutions, demonstrated a shared interest in exploring how international scientific cooperation can accelerate new approaches to healthcare.
As governments worldwide confront the challenges of aging populations and chronic disease, Prof. Mike said stronger partnerships between policymakers, clinicians, scientists, and technology innovators will be increasingly important in translating research into better health outcomes.
