New Partnership Signals Sabah’s Football Transformation

The signing ceremony, attended by Sabah FC leadership, SAFA officials and first-team players, marks a new phase for Sabah football. Sabah FC General Manager Md Joh Wid said the partnership closes a critical gap in the club’s performance infrastructure: “We want our players to come in good condition and leave in good condition. This partnership is crucial for us.”

European Wellness founder Prof. Mike Chan underscored the science behind the collaboration:

“Endurance is not just stamina — it’s the ability to run faster in the second half, last through extra time and stay sharp on the field.”

Both parties said the collaboration is the start of a multi-year plan to position Sabah as a regional hub for sports rehabilitation and sports-science excellence. With players already entering treatment, the message was clear: Sabah football is entering a new era powered by science and resilience.

“We provide the science,” said Prof. Chan.

“This partnership is for the future of Sabah football,” added Md Joh Wid, noting the club is now poised to build a stronger, faster and more enduring team.

EW Leadership in Sports Science

Prof. Mike Chan also underscored that European Wellness’ involvement in sports medicine is not new, but rooted in decades of international scientific work.

He explained that the Group’s foundation in performance science dates back to the 1980s, beginning with its strong presence in Europe, where much of its biomedical research and Olympic-level sports science collaborations were established.

“European Wellness has been in the international field of science and sports medicine since the 80s. Our work started in Germany — that is where everything began,” he said. “From Europe we expanded to the United States, and today our biomedical network spans multiple continents.”

Prof. Chan said modern football demands more than tactical skill and physical talent. It requires scientifically engineered endurance, neurological sharpness and recovery.

“Football today is not only about skill. You need science, real science to enhance performance, recovery and resilience,” he stressed.

He added that European Wellness continues to contribute academically to the field, with multiple publications in sports and “smart medicine,” including new titles on Concussion, Sarcopenia, and an upcoming Sports-Medicine volume.

“We have already written two books, and the third, focused on sports medicine — is coming soon,” he said. “I recently completed a book on Concussion, and another on Sarcopenia will follow. This is the kind of knowledge we want to bring to Sabah.”

Prof. Chan noted that while Sabah FC marks an important milestone, the long-term vision extends even further.“My goal is also to attract major football states like Johor. When they see what Sabah is doing, using science to transform football — others will follow,” he said.
