Prof. Mike Chan Joins UAE’s 54th National Day VIP Reception at JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 02, 2025 – The United Arab Emirates marked its 54th National Day on Tuesday under the theme “United,” with nationwide celebrations across all seven emirates – and a diplomatic reception in the Malaysian capital attended by Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Mike Chan as a special guest of honour.
Hosted by the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Malaysia, the reception was held at the JW Marriott Hotel Kuala Lumpur, an ornate venue in the city’s busy Bukit Bintang district often used for high-level diplomatic and corporate events.
Prof. Mike Chan, the chief scientist of European Wellness Biomedical Group and a leading figure in regenerative and longevity medicine, attended at the invitation of the UAE ambassador, underscoring the Gulf state’s growing engagement with international experts in healthcare and innovation.
From Desert Union to Global Hub
UAE National Day – Eid Al Etihad – commemorates the 1971 union of six emirates into a single federation, with Ras Al Khaimah joining in 1972, transforming a cluster of coastal and desert sheikhdoms into one of the world’s most globally connected economies.
This year’s “United” theme highlighted shared pride and belonging among more than 200 nationalities living and working in the UAE. Across the federation, celebrations included:
- Fireworks volleying over Dubai’s futuristic skyline
- Drone shows and cultural parades blending traditional Al Ayala dance with modern light spectacles
- Folk crafts, storytelling and patriotic programmes in venues from Abu Dhabi’s suburbs to Fujairah’s public beaches
The main ceremony on December 2 was broadcast nationwide, while city squares, waterfronts and majlis-style gatherings were draped in red, green, white and black flags.
Kuala Lumpur Reception: Diplomacy in a Grand Ballroom
In Kuala Lumpur, the UAE Embassy’s reception brought together diplomats, senior officials and business leaders under the ballroom’s domed ceiling, chandeliers and LED backdrop bearing the number “54” and the UAE flag.
Prof. Mike Chan, as a special guest of honour, joined the ambassador and other dignitaries for the formal proceedings, which included:
- Welcoming remarks highlighting 54 years of UAE unity and development
- A short segment on UAE–Malaysia relations, including trade, investment and cultural ties
- A networking reception where Emirati and Malaysian guests discussed opportunities in sectors such as energy, finance, tourism and healthcare
Though a full guest list had not been made public at the time of writing, invitees included members of the diplomatic corps, Malaysian government representatives and leaders from the business and medical communities, consistent with past UAE National Day receptions in Kuala Lumpur.
Building on Abu Dhabi Lectures and High-Level Friendships
Prof. Chan’s appearance at the Kuala Lumpur event built on his recent lecture engagements in Abu Dhabi, where he was invited to speak on regenerative medicine, organ-based cellular therapy and healthy longevity to a regional audience of clinicians and policymakers.
He also maintains an ongoing friendship with H.E. Dr. Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Khalid Abdulla Mubarak Albuainain Almazrouiei, a senior advisor to the UAE President, and has forged close ties with the UAE’s diplomatic leadership in Malaysia over the years. Those relationships, insiders say, place him in a unique position as an informal bridge between scientific innovation and Gulf decision-makers.
During the reception, Prof. Chan presented several of his latest stem cell, regenerative and longevity medicine books to the ambassador and selected VIPs, symbolising his commitment to knowledge-sharing and the UAE’s broader interest in advanced healthcare, wellness tourism and medical education.
“The UAE’s story of unity and progress is deeply inspiring,” Prof. Chan was quoted as saying privately to associates at the event. “It shows how vision, leadership and long-term planning can transform not just a country, but an entire region’s outlook on the future of health and quality of life.”
Significance for UAE–Malaysia Relations
Analysts say the 54th National Day theme “United” not only reflected domestic cohesion but also the UAE’s desire to project a message of openness and partnership abroad.
For Malaysia, hosting a high-profile National Day reception at a landmark venue like JW Marriott – and inviting figures such as Prof. Chan – underscores several priorities:
- Deepening economic ties, particularly in investment, logistics, and halal-related trade
- Expanding cooperation in medical tourism and wellness, where both countries see potential synergies
- Strengthening people-to-people links, through education, culture and professional exchanges
The UAE already counts Malaysia as a significant partner in Southeast Asia, and embassy events like this serve as visible touchpoints in a relationship that spans government, business and now increasingly healthcare, science and biotech.
