Specific features of osteopenia management in patients with nephrolithiasis
About the Study:
Managing osteopenia in patients with nephrolithiasis presents a unique clinical challenge, as calcium supplementation may improve bone density while simultaneously increasing the risk of kidney stone recurrence.
This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of combined calcium citrate, vitamin D3, and vitamin K2 therapy in patients with osteopenia and nephrolithiasis, with a comprehensive assessment of:
✔️ Bone mineral density (BMD)
✔️ Trabecular bone quality (TBS)
✔️ Bone turnover markers
✔️ Renal salt transport parameters
✔️ Oxalate and calcium excretion profiles
🔬 Key Findings:
- Combined calcium citrate therapy improved lumbar spine BMD in both patient groups
- Significant reductions in urinary oxalate excretion were observed during treatment
- Patients with hypercalciuria required careful monitoring and benefited from thiazide diuretic substitution according to urological guidelines
- The study highlights the importance of personalized metabolic evaluation before initiating osteopenia treatment in patients with kidney stone disease
These findings contribute to a more precise and integrative strategy for managing patients with overlapping metabolic bone and renal disorders.
