Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Mike Chan’s 2026 Merdeka Message

A Malaysia Where Wellbeing Is Truly Experienced

As Malaysia celebrates Merdeka in 2026, I am reminded that independence is more than a chapter in our history. It is a continuing responsibility to build a country where every generation can live with dignity, hope, and a sense of belonging.

This year’s theme, Malaysia MADANI: Kesejahteraan Dinikmati, invites us to reflect on the true meaning of progress. Wellbeing should not be enjoyed by only a fortunate few. It should be felt by all Malaysians—in the health of our families, the strength of our communities, the quality of our opportunities, and the confidence we have in our shared future.

I began my journey as a kampung boy. Life later took me to different countries and communities, where I gained knowledge, experience, and friendships. No matter how far I travel or how many places my work takes me in a single month, my heart continues to yearn for Malaysia. It is true: you can take me out of Malaysia, but you can never take Malaysia out of me. Malaysia has always been more than a place on a map. It is home, identity, memory, and responsibility.

My journey has strengthened my belief that success is meaningful only when it is accompanied by humility and a willingness to contribute. Professional achievement should never separate us from the people around us. Instead, it should deepen our appreciation for the opportunities we have received and remind us of our duty to help build a better future for others.

Healthcare, in particular, is about more than facilities, technology, or professional recognition. It is about compassion. It is about listening to people, respecting their dignity, encouraging healthier lives, and ensuring that no one feels forgotten. A caring nation is one that values not only economic progress, but also the wellbeing of its people.

Malaysia’s strength lies in its diversity, its resilience, and the ability of its people to stand together despite our differences. Our future will depend not only on what we achieve individually, but also on how generously we share our knowledge, opportunities, and success with one another.

This Merdeka, let us celebrate the freedom to dream, the courage to work hard, and the wisdom to remember where we came from. Let us continue building a Malaysia where progress is inclusive, compassion is valued, and every citizen has the opportunity to experience a life of dignity and wellbeing.

May our Jalur Gemilang continue to remind us that we are part of one nation, one home, and one shared journey.

Kesejahteraan mesti dirasai, bukan sekadar disebut.

Wellbeing must be experienced, not merely spoken about.

Selamat Hari Merdeka ke-69.

Merdeka!
